NA FAMILY SERVICES

Legal Immigration

Legal Permanent Residents (Green Card)

In 2024, an estimated 980,000 people obtained lawful permanent resident (LPR) status in the United States. This figure reflects a slight decrease compared to fiscal year 2023, when approximately 1.17 million people became lawful permanent residents, according to data from the Office of Homeland Security Statistics (OHSS).

In recent years, the total number of new permanent residents has shown a stable trend, with variations influenced by changes in immigration policies, processing times, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Family reunification remains the primary pathway to obtaining residency, accounting for approximately 64% of new LPRs, followed by employment categories, the
refugees and asylum seekers, and to a lesser extent, visa lottery programs and other humanitarian reasons.

Migration Statistics and Data

Refugees and Asylum Seekers

In fiscal year 2024, the United States admitted approximately 100,000 refugees through its official resettlement program, reaching the highest level of admissions in nearly three decades. This figure represents a significant increase compared to previous years and reflects recent efforts to restore and expand humanitarian pathways for international protection.

During the same period, more than 150,000 eligibility interviews for refugee processes were carried out, demonstrating a significant expansion in the system's operational capacity.

Regarding asylum, applications remain at historically high levels. As of the end of 2024, more than 1.4 million affirmative cases remained pending with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), while immigration courts were accumulating a backlog.
a similar figure of more than 1.4 million defensive applications.

These figures reflect the magnitude of current migration and humanitarian challenges: on the one hand, sustained growth in refugee admissions; on the other, unprecedented pressure
regarding the asylum system, which continues to receive tens of thousands of new applications each month.

Compared to previous years, the number of refugee admissions has almost quadrupled since 2022, when only about 25,000 were recorded. However, the demand for international protection continues to far exceed the institutional capacity to process cases within reasonable timeframes.

Undocumented Immigration

Undocumented Population

For the period 2024-2025, it is estimated that between 14 and 15 million undocumented immigrants reside in the United States, a figure that represents the highest level recorded in decades.

This increase reflects the sustained migration flows of recent years, as well as delays in regularization and asylum processes.
The main countries of origin continue to be Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, although in recent years there has been a notable increase in people from Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua and India, which shows a greater diversity in migration routes and motivations.

Despite the growth in the overall population, the profile of undocumented immigrants has changed: they are increasingly families, asylum seekers, and workers with long-term stays in the country. This reality poses significant challenges in terms of social integration, access to services, compliance with labor laws, and sustainable migration policies.

Border Crossings and Arrests

Since February 2025, irregular crossings at the U.S. southern border have fallen to record lows, registering a reduction of over 90% year-over-year. New enforcement measures, along with regional agreements and asylum restrictions, have virtually eliminated attempts at unauthorized entry.

Currently, the border remains under strict control, with most of the revenue
processed only through legal and humanitarian channels, marking the period of lowest migratory flow in more than two decades.

Naturalization

Citizenship

In 2024, more than 800,000 immigrants became U.S. citizens.
maintaining a stable trend compared to previous years.

However, the naturalization process has become more rigorous, especially in the evaluation of moral conduct, background checks, and the requirement of civic and language knowledge.

Temporary Migration

During the period 2024-2025, the United States has issued more than 10 million temporary nonimmigrant visas, reflecting a full recovery in international mobility levels following the pandemic.

The most common categories continue to be those for skilled labor (H-1B), agricultural work (H-2A) and temporary non-agricultural services (H-2B), in addition to a high volume of visas for tourism, study and cultural exchange.

The increased demand for work and academic visas has been accompanied by stricter review processes and additional verification requirements. Despite this, temporary migration remains an essential pillar of the economy and cultural ties between the United States and the rest of the world.
